IPL 2013Final : Mumbai Indians won maiden IPL Trophy as Chennai Super Kings batting comes a cropper

mumbai-indians-ipl-6-winners.jpg

Mumbai Indians
drubbed Chennai Super Kings in an unusually one-sided final for a maiden IPL Trophy. Needing to chase 149 on a slow pitch, Chennai Super Kings slipped into a disastrous position of 39 for 6 inside 8 overs. An explosive fifty from Skipper MS Dhoni could only reduce the margin of defeat to 23 runs and helped CSK to a modest 125 for 9.
Mumbai Indians drubbed Chennai Super Kings in an unusually one-sided final for a maiden IPL Trophy

Mumbai Indians 148 for 9 (Pollard 60*, Bravo 4-42, Morkel 2-12) beat Chennai Super Kings 125 for 9 (Dhoni 63*, Johnson 2-19, Harbhajan 2-14) by 23 runs
Kept alive by Kieron Pollard's fighting 60 off 32, the Mumbai Indians bowlers attacked their way to a first IPL title. Mumbai were struggling at 52 for 4 in the 10th over, but Pollard batted through the innings to take them 148 even as wickets kept falling as the other end.

Kieron Pollard top-scored against Super Kings again
Lasith Malinga and Mitchell Johnson then were too good for the Chennai Super Kings batsmen, yorking and bouncing them out.
Super Kings' two big Indian batsmen fell to bouncers, their best batsman was done in by a perfect Malinga yorker, and the rest fell under the weight of the pressure and their own conservatism. MS Dhoni came in to bat at No. 7, and Albie Morkel at 8. Twenty20 doesn't always favour aggressive sides, in that wickets don't mean as much as they should, but in this match it did.
Wickets were there aplenty for Super Kings too. There were three in the first four overs as the ball seamed, and Mohit Sharma and Morkel bowled smartly and steadily. When Dinesh Karthik fell in the 10th over, Super Kings were arguably one big wicket away from killing the game. That one big wicket never came.
The first ball Pollard faced he defended away for four. That was sweetly played. He just pushed at a shortish delivery, but the ball scurried along between the bowler and mid-off. He lost Ambati Rayudu after a 48-run fifth-wicket stand, but kept bringing up fours and sixes without taking risks. His countryman, Dwayne Bravo, though, threatened to ruin his plans.
Pollard had taken Mumbai to 129 for 6 after 18 overs, and would have been looking for 40 more. A tight Chris Morris over later, Bravo kept Pollard away from the strike through two wickets off the first three balls of the last over. Pollard took the risk fourth ball and ran even though the ball had reached the slip straight on a half-volley. Now Pollard had two balls to do something about the score that read only 136.
And do something Pollard did. The first of the two balls was a low full toss and he flicked it for a straight six. Then came a slower ball, which pitched on a length, and Pollard dismissed it out of his presence. Twelve runs taken off the last two balls, Mumbai were reminded by their analyst that they had scored 148 in their first match against Super Kings too. Pollard had scored 57 not out then too. They won by nine back then.
This time, though, they would need something special. Malinga, asked to bowl the first over, delivered nothing less than special. A swinging yorker first squeezed under Michael Hussey's bat. Out came Suresh Raina. In came a backward short leg. Out came an accurate bouncer. Raina fended at it while looking towards third man. Backward short leg took the catch.
Super Kings now sent crisis man S Badrinath ahead of the bigger hitters. If consolidation was his brief, Badrinath exceeded it by driving at a wide length ball from Mitchell Johnson and edging it through. Still no Dhoni. Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja didn't take too long, and Dhoni had to finally come out at 36 for 5 in the seventh over. However, he ran out of batsmen soon with M Vijay falling to a Johnson bouncer and Morkel to a full Pragyan Ojha delivery, and actually had to begin farming the strike and refuse singles with six overs still to go.
Most of Dhoni's 63 off 45 after the match had been lost, and only gave Mumbai an extended time on the field to celebrate the title even when the match was on.

Toss and Teams: Mumbai Indians have won the toss and elected to bat first in the IPL 6 Final against the Chennai Super Kings at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Both the teams are unchanged from their last games. The pitch for the contest is on the drier side and it could assist the slow bowlers big time.
Mumbai Indians : Dwayne Smith, Aditya Tare, Dinesh Karthik(w), Rohit Sharma (C), Kieron Pollard, Ambati Rayudu, Harbhajan Singh, Rishi Dhawan, Mitchell Johnson, Lasith Malinga, Pragyan Ojha
Chennai Super Kings: Michael Hussey, Murali Vijay, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (C&WK), Ravindra Jadeja, S Badrinath, Dwayne Bravo, Albie Morkel, Chris Morris, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohit Sharma

IPL 2013 Final -Chennai Super Kings Vs Mumbai Indians at Kolkata - May 26, 2013

After a month-and-a-half of many seemingly brainless matches, it is a relief that the Indian Premier League is finally coming to an end. In the wake of what has transpired over the last fortnight, the title clash has little significance left. The owner of the most successful side in the franchise, Chennai Super Kings, who will be one of the finalists, is cooling his heels in custody even as his franchise, which has now disowned him, gets set for battle on the field. But, as they say, the show must go on, and keeping in with the spirit, Chennai and their opponents, Mumbai Indians would keen to lay their hands on the trophy. Since Chennai have already won the IPL twice before, and have been finalists five out of six times, they would undoubtedly be viewed as the favourites. One of the prime reasons why Chennai have been so successful over the years in the event is because there have been very few changes in personnel in the team over the years, unlike all the other sides. Mind you, the case could also be vice versa. Another advantage they have over Mumbai is that they have beaten the latter in the IPL final before, in 2010. Mumbai would thus be eager to win this time. It remains to be seen whether all the off-field drama surrounding the franchise will affect the Chennai players.
Speaking of the match up, the final clash of the tournament might well be decided by the contest between Chennai’s batsmen and Mumbai’s bowlers, the stronger suits of the respective sides. Michael Hussey may have retired from international cricket, but he has been nothing short of sensational at the top of the order for Chennai. In fact, he goes in the final as Orange Cap holder, having taken over from Chris Gayle. Thanks to Hussey’s brilliance, Chennai haven’t suffered owing to Murali Vijay’s lack of form. As for Vijay, he is a big match player, who was the man of the match last time Chennai won the crown and, hence cannot be written off.
Suresh Raina is the other man, who has continued his IPL dominance. Although he had mixed luck in the initial matches, he has come into his own in the recent games, and in the qualifier against Mumbai he was at his aggressive best. MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo have also come good with the bat when needed. As for Mumbai’s bowling, they would be heavily reliant on Harbhajan Singh, who struck form in the qualifier against Rajasthan Royals, and Mitchell Johnson, who has been their most effective bowler this season. Although Lasith Malinga hasn’t been at his best, his needs to have only one good game to undo all the poor work.
There are a few other players from both teams who will be crucial to their side’s chances on the big day. From Chennai’s side, the likes of Albie Morkel, Ravichandran Ashwin and S. Badrinath have not had much to do, but they are experienced campaigners, who can deliver in crunch situations. As for Mumbai, Dwayne Smith will be crucial at the top of the order again, while Rohit Sharma would want to lead from the front one final time.

Qualifier 2 - Mumbai Indians Vs Rajasthan Royals at Kolkata - May 24, 2013 - Poor fielding led to Rajasthan’s downfall

Rajasthan Royals wouldn’t be disappointed that they did not make it to the IPL 6 final. The fact that they progressed to the last four in spite of having just one superstar player in Shane Watson is nothing short of an achievement for Rajasthan Royals’ men. But, throughout the season, Rahul Dravid’s men have prided themselves on putting up their best in all departments of the game irrespective of the result. In that respect, they would be frustrated by their abysmal fielding effort on Friday, which went a long way in them not making it to the summit clash.
Defending a total that can best be described as challenging, Rajasthan ought to have been at their best with both ball and in the field. And, while their bowling was steady without being threatening, Rajasthan’s fielding on the day was nothing short of shambolic. There were misfields, overthrows, fumbles and a dropped catch at a stage where the match was evenly balanced. All this combined to allow Mumbai to escape to victory, and book their place in the IPL final for only the second time, where they would meet Chennai Super Kings, their final opponents back in 2010 as well.
While Rajasthan were exceedingly poor in the field, it must be said that Mumbai’s batsmen also played a major role in allowing Dravid’s men to stay in the game till the end overs. After getting off to a blazing start, Mumbai just needed to bat out the overs to cruise to victory. Instead, their batsmen played some strange shots to keep Rajasthan in with a chance. The most bizarre aspect of such dismissals were that most of these batsmen got out chipping the ball in the air, and not while trying to clear the field with the big hits, which would still have been understandable. It was as if Mumbai’s batsmen wanted to make the crucial game interesting, and they almost paid the price for it.
In the end, the cushion of a strong opening partnership and some smart hitting lower down the order saw them through to victory. Dwayne Smith played yet another sizzling innings at the top of the order, and he was well supported by Aditya Tare in the absence of Sachin Tendulkar. Dinesh Karthik could not get the desired big score, but his breezy cameo at least ensured that Mumbai always stayed ahead of the required run rate. In the slog overs, Ambati Rayudu played a couple of fancy strokes, which swung the momentum of the game, and by this time, Rajasthan’s bowlers were beginning to feel the pressure.
Earlier in the evening, following a delayed start, Harbhajan Singh came up with wonderful spell to restrict Rajasthan to a gettable total. His dismissals comprised all three big names – Watson, Dravid and Rahane and so it wasn’t surprising that he was named the man of the match. Thanks to Harbhajan’s blows, Rajasthan could not get the desired score on the board. Skipper Dravid played a substantial knock, but the others got starts and fell. Dishant Yagnik’s crisp knock took them to a respectable total. But, considering their shabby fielding, they were at least 30 runs short.
Turning point of the game: The penultimate over of the game, bowled by Kevon Cooper, which cost 15 runs. Mumbai needed 23 off 12 balls, and following this over, which included a dropped catch they cruised to a win.

Spot Fixing - I am innocent have done no wrong says sreesanth in statement

I'm innocent, never indulged in spot-fixing: Sreesanth

IPL 6 spot-fixing

In a statement emailed to the media by his lawyer Rebecca John, the cricketer said "I have never indulged in any spot fixing and I have always played cricket in the spirit of the game". (Also read: Police say Sreesanth shopped for clothes worth 1.9 lakhs, bought smartphone for girlfriend) Sreesanth, who was on Tuesday remanded to further five-day police custody by Metropolitan Magistrate Soumya Chauhan, said "as a cricketer, I have learnt to take knocks along with accolades, in my stride. I recognise that I am going through a tough period in my life. "I have utmost faith in our judicial process and I am confident that with time I will be proved innocent, and my honour and dignity will be vindicated and restored," the statement said. Dressed in a blue T-shirt and jeans, Sreesanth was apparently unmindful of the huge crowd of lawyers and mediapersons in the courtroom. The police on Tuesday also invoked section 409 IPC (criminal breach of trust) against Sreesanth, his Rajasthan Royal teammates Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandalia and 12 other accused, including bookies and mediators.

Pune Warriors India pull out of Indian Premier League

The Sahara Group, which owns the Pune Warriors franchise, pulls out of the IPL. Sahara also says its sponsorship of the Indian team will also end in December 2013.

The scandal-hit Indian Premier League today suffered another blow with the Sahara Group-owned Pune Warriors Indians withdrawing from the event due to the BCCI's lackadaisical arbitration proceedings to lower the franchise fee and it's decision to encash the team's bank guarantee. Sahara, which bought the franchise for Rs 1700 crore in 2010, said it was "disgusted" by the BCCI's attitude towards it and will not rejoin the league even if the entire franchise fee was waved off. "...we would not keep the IPL franchisee even if the entire franchisee fee is waved off. It is firm and final decision of Sahara to withdraw from IPL," the Sahara Group said in a detailed statement. "In 2010, Sahara had bid 1700 crore for IPL franchise on the basis of revenue calculation on 94 matches. It was tricky on part of BCCI to put the number in media as 94 matches for getting bigger amount. But we got 64 matches only," it added. Sahara claimed that the BCCI turned a deaf ear to its pleadings for arbitration and reducing the franchise fee. May 21, 2013 Mumbai A Correspondent [Pin It] The scandal-hit Indian Premier League today suffered another blow with the Sahara Group-owned Pune Warriors Indians withdrawing from the event due to the BCCI's lackadaisical arbitration proceedings to lower the franchise fee and it's decision to encash the team's bank guarantee. Pune Warriors India withdraw from IPL Pune Warriors will not be part of IPL 2014. "We and Kochi Team immediately protested and requested BCCI to reduce the bid price proportionately for viable IPL proposition. Nothing was heard. We waited with confidence that such a sports body should have sportsmanship spirit," it said. "We continuously requested BCCI for Arbitration from June 2011. But BCCI is only concerned about money and not about the genuine interests of the franchisee. Thus, (when) we could not penetrate BCCI's deaf ears, we announced our withdrawal in February 2012," it added. Sahara Group said it was tempted to withdraw from the Indian cricket team's sponsorship also but refrained from doing so in the interest of the players. "There is a very strong urge in us to withdraw from the Indian Cricket Team Sponsorship from today only. But, interest of the players will suffer if we do so. "We share an excellent relationship with the players and will not want such dedicated and good human beings who serve the country so committed to get harmed financially due to unsporting attitude of BCCI," the Group said. "So we have given time to BCCI to get the new sponsorship in place from January 2014, as we will continue the national team's sponsorship only up to December 2013 that's the expiry date of the present agreement." Recollecting the 2012 withdrawals and the subsequent return, the Group said the BCCI did not keep its word with regards to arbitration. "The BCCI approached us for a solution and requested us to not withdraw. After a series of discussions with the topmost BCCI officials including the BCCI President at Mumbai, a Joint Statement was issued by Sahara and BCCI in Feb 2012. The Joint Statement, amongst many other things, specifically mentioned the agreement to start Arbitration proceedings through immediate appointment of an Arbitrator," it said. "...Sahara suggested the name of a Retired Hon'ble Chief Justice of India on the 5th March 2012 to be appointed as the Arbitrator. There was no response from BCCI for four months and after repeated prodding, finally on the 9th of July Sahara's advocates received a letter from BCCI rejecting the name proposed by Sahara without mentioning any reason and also without suggesting any alternatives," it added. The company said the Board rejected all other names suggested by it for arbitration. "...despite our repeated efforts to have the Arbitration initiated, we sent other suggestion of names which too were turned down and instead meaningless communication was created to stall finalisation," it said. "In the meanwhile, Sahara kept on paying the full Franchise Fee of Rs 170.20 crore annually, without prejudice to its rights and contentions, in the hope that this will be resolved soon. But unfortunately, it was not done," it added. Sahara said its Chairman Subroto Roy met BCCI President on numerous occasions but the matter remained unresolved. "Fed up with this stalemate our Hon'ble Chairman Saharasri ji had written to the BCCI president that the arbitration for downward revision of the fees has not progressed in 3 years time, hence, has requested for a proper meeting to personally discuss the way forward and explicitly said that if a downward revision is not possible then we would want to surrender the franchisee. This fell on deaf ear," the company claimed. Sahara said it wanted to exit IPL at the start of this season itself and had requested the BCCI not to touch the bank guarantee. "...this time we requested Hon'ble Shri Rajeev Shukla ji, (IPL Chairman) that if BCCI cannot accept Arbitration, we then want to amicably exit IPL. Our Chairman in clear words was told again by Hon'ble Shri Rajeev Shukla ji that Bank guarantee will not be touched, not be revoked since the expiry date of bank guarantee was 2nd May 2013," it said. "Had we followed the legal advise of withdrawing at the start of the IPL season, this would have resulted in tremendous pressure on BCCI for resolving the issue whereas BCCI has shown no consideration towards the sport which we have been supporting for more than a decade," it added. The Sahara group claimed that the BCCI threatened to take concerned bank to court if the guarantee was not paid immediately. "We still tried to contact for amicable settlement, but could not get anybody on phone in time. But our bank people informed that even at 8 in the evening, the BCCI representative was still present in the Bank and threatened the bank that if money is not paid today to BCCI, they shall enter court to blacklist Bank. "One should ask BCCI why they did not approach bank for revocation of our bank guarantee from 2nd May to 19th May. It is important to state that Sahara has never, ever defaulted in any of its due payment in last 13 years of team sponsorship etc," it said. "We put on record that there is not a single rupee outstanding towards the sponsorship of Indian Cricket Team and BCCI is even secured by a bank guarantee against the sponsorship. "Rather during ICC Champions Trophy 2002, Sahara had paid full sponsorship amount even without Sahara branding on the player's Jersey...We now request BCCI to not to approach us this time for any discussion as they have done in February 2012."

Chennai Super Kings down Mumbai Indians to enter IPL Final for the fifth time

Chennai Super Kings have entered into the Final of the Indian Premier League for the fifth time in six years. Tonight they beat Mumbai Indians by a huge margin of 48 runs in Qualifier 1 at the Feroz Shah Kotla. All is not over yet for the Mumbai Indians who will play in Qualifier 2 on the 24th against the Eliminator Winner.
The match was set up nicely by a huge 140-run stand for the 2nd wicket between the in-form Michael Hussey and Suresh Raina. Hussey scored an unbeaten 86 from 58 balls with 10 fours and 2 sixes to get the Orange Cap. Suresh Raina was the more explosive of the two scoring his fifty in 29 balls and finishing with 82* from 42 balls with 5 fours and 5 sixes. The only wicket to fall in the CSK innings was that of Murali Vijay who batted well for a 20-ball 23. Chennai Super Kings piled up 192 for 1.
Chennai Super Kings down Mumbai Indians to enter IPL Final for the fifth time

It was a poor day in the office for the two overseas speedsters – Mitchell Johnson and Lasith Malinga with both of them conceding more than 40 runs in their four overs. Harbhajan Singh was the only Mumbai bowler who held his own with his 0 for 26 in 4 overs.
The pitch was absolutely flat and the outfield was dead quick. However, CSK got just too many runs on the board. Mumbai Indians lost an early wicket but an insignificant one of Aditya Tare. Their innings got going with Dwayne Smith playing in an explosive fashion to score a fifty in just 21 balls to seriously threaten the CSK party. Smith couldn’t last enough distance though and perished in the 9th over slicing a Jadeja delivery to covers. The West Indian scored 68 from 26 balls with 6 fours and 5 sixes to leave Mumbai Indians at 87 for 2.
Mumbai had a mini collapse after Smith’s exit with Dinesh Karthik and Rohit Sharma falling in the space of 9 balls. Karthik was lbw to Jadeja missing a sweep while Rohit smacked a Chris Morris delivery into the hands of long off to leave his side at 101 for 4 in 12 overs. Kieron Pollard raises hopes of a revival with a couple of big sixes but got out flicking Jadeja into the hands of backward squareleg. Pollard finished with a cameo of 24 from 16 balls and his departure meant curtains for the Mumbai Indians at 127 for 5 in 14.5 overs.
Mumbai collapsed to 144 all out in 18.4 overs thanks to some great catching from the Chennai Super Kings. Jadeja and Bravo picked up three wickets each and the latter got back his purple cap. The Man of the Match went to Michael Hussey instead of Suresh Raina.
Toss and Teams: Chennai Super Kings have won the toss and elected to bat first against the Mumbai Indians at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi in Qualifer 1 of IPL 6. The winner of this match will enter the Final while the loser will play in Qualifier 2.

Mumbai Indians have surprisingly made four changes with Dwayne Smith, Munaf Patel, Pragyan Ojha and Johnson coming in for Maxwell, Coulter-Nile, Dhawal Kulkarni and Rishi Dhawan. Sachin Tendulkar is still not fit according to Skipper Rohit Sharma. CSK have made just the one change with Albie Morkel taking the place of Jason Holder.
