40th Match IPL 2011 : Mumbai Indians Vs Kings XI Punjab { MI beat Kings XI Punjab by 23 runs }

    Mumbai Indians ascended to the first position of the popular Indian Premiere League (IPL) on Monday evening after defeating Kings XI Punjab by 23 runs at the Wankhede Stadium.

Chasing Mumbai Indians' score of 159 for five wickets, the Kings batsmen could only make 136 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their quota of 20 overs in the league level T20 encounter.

Batting first, Mumbai Indians, had a miserable start to the match as they lost the wicket of D. Jacobs (10) at the score of 14 runs on the board.

The 95 runs second wicket partnership between Sachin Tendulkar and Rayudu sailed the Mumbai Indians innings towards a handsome score on the board.

The partnership was finally broken by P Chawla as he picked up the wicket of Rayudu at his personal score of 51. The scorecard at that point showed 109 for the loss of two wickets.

Rayudu had hit eight boundaries and a sixer in the match.

Rayudu was followed by Sachin Tendulkar who lost his wicket to Harris in the seventh over of the match as the score card showed 129 for the loss of three wickets.

The remaining batters could only score 159 for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs.

Chasing the winning target of 160 runs the Kings XI Punjab team could only score 136 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs.

SE Marsh topped the innings with his 61 runs from 47 deliveries. He hit 8 boundaries in the match before losing his wicket to the Sri Lankan strike bowler L. Malinga.

PC Valthaty gave him good company with the willow as he contributed 33 runs in the match. He hit two boundaries and a huge sixer that had added some momentum to the Kings XI Punjab run chase.

Both the batsmen had added 72 runs in their second wicket partnership.

But once Kings lost the wicket of these two inform batters, the rest of the players failed to maintain the momentum which ultimately lead to their sides consecutive defeat in the Indian Premiere League.

Harbhajan Singh who opened the ball on Monday along with L. Malinga and M. Patel shared two wickets each in the match.

With this loss Preity Zinta'a Punjab lies at the eighth position at the points table while Mumbai reached the top spot in the chart.
