Every team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is allowed to bring in an "impact player" for each match, whether it be a bowler or a batsman. When submitting their team sheet, captains are allowed to name four substitute players, one of whom can be called up later. An impact player can do everything on the pitch, whether it be batting, bowling, or fielding.

However, only an Indian player can be an impact player unless the franchise has less than four foreign players in their playing eleven. According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), a foreign player who is part of the four substitutes on the team sheet can be used as an impact player. If a team wants to bring in a foreign player as an impact player for a match, the fifth foreign player will always have to come on to the field in any situation.

It is also important to note that an impact player can only be brought into the game before the start of an innings or after an over has been completed. When it comes to batting, an impact player can be brought in when a wicket falls, or when a batsman decides to retire at any time during an over.

However, a team can only use one impact player per match, and the player can only replace a non-injured player. The rules for an impact player may seem complex, but it gives teams the opportunity to have a game-changer in their squad, adding another layer of excitement to the IPL.
